۞ يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلۡأَهِلَّةِۖ قُلۡ هِيَ مَوَٰقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَٱلۡحَجِّۗ وَلَيۡسَ ٱلۡبِرُّ بِأَن تَأۡتُواْ ٱلۡبُيُوتَ مِن ظُهُورِهَا وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلۡبِرَّ مَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰۗ وَأۡتُواْ ٱلۡبُيُوتَ مِنۡ أَبۡوَٰبِهَاۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the crescent moons. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for ḥajj [pilgrimage]." And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allāh. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allāh that you may succeed.

Al-Mukhtasar
They ask you, O Messenger, about the formation of the new moons and their changing states. Tell them in reply about the wisdom behind this: that they are a way for people to measure time so they know when to perform their acts of worship, such as the months of Hajj and fasting and the completion of the year for Zakat. It is also so that they know the time for their transactions, such as the deadlines for paying blood money or debts. It is not righteousness or piety that you come to houses from the rear wearing your iḥrām for Hajj or Umrah, as you used to claim pre-Islam. Rather, true righteousness lies in those mindful of Allah, outwardly and inwardly. Entering houses from their correct doors is easier for you and less troublesome. Allah does not overburden you with difficulty and hardship, so create a barrier from the punishment of Allah through good deeds, so perhaps you may be successful in achieving what you desire, and attaining salvation from what you fear.
