Then He sent down peace and security after the pain and distress, prompting sleep to envelop a group among you who were confident in Allah's promise, resulting in a feeling of safety and serenity in their hearts. Another group, the hypocrites, did not receive a sense of safety or sleepiness. They only worried about their own safety, mired in anxiety and fear. They held negative presumptions about Allah, thinking that He would not grant His Prophet victory or support His slaves. They presumed just like the people of the Age of Ignorance who did not assess Allah as He deserved. Due to their ignorance of Allah, these hypocrites say: "We do not have a say about the command to march forth for battle. If we did, we would not have marched forth." Say, O Prophet, in reply to these people: "Truly, the entire matter is for Allah to decide. For He is the one who foreordains whatever He wills, He determines whatever He wills, and He is the One who decreed your marching forth." These hypocrites hide within themselves doubts and negative presumptions that they do not express to you, considering that they say: "If we had a say in the matter of marching forth, we would not have been killed in this location." Tell them, O Prophet, in rebuking them: "Even if you had remained in your homes, far from the locales of killing and death, those among you for whom Allah had written death would surely have departed for wherever their deaths would take place. Allah did not write that except to test the intentions and motives in your chests and to distinguish what they contained of Belief and hypocrisy. Allah knows what is in the chests of His slaves, and nothing in them is hidden from Him.
