Asr prayer

Asr begins when shadows reach a set multiple of an object height and ends at sunset.

Asr is the afternoon prayer, and its start is defined by shadow length rather than by an angle below the horizon. In the standard position, followed by the Shafii, Maliki and Hanbali schools, Asr begins when an object shadow equals its own height plus the length of its shadow at solar noon. In the Hanafi position it begins when that shadow reaches twice the object height plus the noon shadow, which falls roughly an hour later in most places, narrowing to twenty minutes in a northern winter and widening to about eighty minutes near the tropics in summer. The window ends at sunset. Every timetable states which of the two it uses, and on this site the Hanafi definition is applied to cities in countries where it is the prevailing practice, with the choice named on each city page.
