يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَقُولُواْ رَٰعِنَا وَقُولُواْ ٱنظُرۡنَا وَٱسۡمَعُواْۗ وَلِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ
O you who have believed, say not [to Allāh's Messenger], "Rāʿinā" but say, "Unẓurnā"35 and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
Translator notes (1)
- 35 The word "rāʿinā" in Arabic literally means "consider us," i.e., give us time to hear you and listen to us. The Jews used to use the same word with the meaning of an insult. Therefore, the believers were ordered to avoid this expression and use instead the word "unẓurnā," i.e., "wait for us [so that we may understand]."

Al-Mukhtasar
Allah, the Exalted, directs the believers to be careful in choosing their words when addressing the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, telling them not to say 'rā'inā', meaning 'consider our condition/affairs' or 'shepherd us.', because the Jews would distort and address the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم with it, thereby changing its meaning to 'foolish' or 'heedless.' So, Allah prohibited them from using this phrase to shut the door to mockery. Instead, He prescribed His slaves to say: 'unẓurnā,' meaning 'wait for us to understand what you are saying', as this phrase has no negative connotation while conveying the same meaning. For the disbelievers lies an excruciating and painful torment with Allah.
