Allāh instructs you concerning your children [i.e., their portions of inheritance]: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one's estate.164 And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one's parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [and/or sisters], for his mother is a sixth,165 after any bequest he [may have] made or debt.166 Your parents or your children - you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
Translator notes (3)
- 164 Literally, "that which he left."
- 165 Although the siblings themselves do not inherit in this case.
- 166 Based upon prophetic ḥadīths, scholars have ruled that debt takes precedent over a bequest, that a bequest may not include any who inherit by law, and that the total bequest may not be more than one third of one's estate. After the fulfillment of debts and bequests (if any), the remainder of the estate is to be divided according to the ordinances in this sūrah.

Al-Mukhtasar
Allah entrusts and orders you concerning your children's inheritance to divide it between them as follows: a son gets a share equal to the share of two daughters. If the deceased left two daughters or more without a son, they get two-thirds of what is left behind. If there is just one daughter, she gets half of what is left behind. Each of the deceased's parents gets a sixth of what is left behind if he has a male or female child. If he has no children or heir except for his parents, the mother gets a third, and the father gets the rest as an unfixed share. If the deceased has two or more siblings, male or female, full siblings or half-siblings, his mother gets a sixth share as a fixed share, and the father gets the rest as an unfixed share. There is nothing for the siblings. This division of the inheritance is after execution of the bequests that the deceased ordered on the stipulation that his bequests cannot be more than a third of his total wealth and his debts have been repaid. Allah has divided inheritance like this because you do not know who among your parents and children are most beneficial to you in the worldly life and Afterlife. The deceased may presume the best of one of his heirs and leave everything to him or presume the worst of someone and forbid him from receiving anything. Then, it turns out that the circumstances were contrary to that. The one who is aware of all of that is Allah. He is the one from whom nothing is hidden. For this reason, the division of inheritance was made clear, and He made it an obligation for His slaves. Allah knows everything, and nothing is hidden from Him concerning the welfare of His slaves. He is All-Wise in His legislation and management.
