Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:10 الممتحنة

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِذَا جَآءَكُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتُ مُهَٰجِرَٰتٖ فَٱمۡتَحِنُوهُنَّۖ ٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِإِيمَٰنِهِنَّۖ فَإِنۡ عَلِمۡتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤۡمِنَٰتٖ فَلَا تَرۡجِعُوهُنَّ إِلَى ٱلۡكُفَّارِۖ لَا هُنَّ حِلّٞ لَّهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّۖ وَءَاتُوهُم مَّآ أَنفَقُواْۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ أَن تَنكِحُوهُنَّ إِذَآ ءَاتَيۡتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّۚ وَلَا تُمۡسِكُواْ بِعِصَمِ ٱلۡكَوَافِرِ وَسۡـَٔلُواْ مَآ أَنفَقۡتُمۡ وَلۡيَسۡـَٔلُواْ مَآ أَنفَقُواْۚ ذَٰلِكُمۡ حُكۡمُ ٱللَّهِ يَحۡكُمُ بَيۡنَكُمۡۖ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٞ
O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine [i.e., test] them. Allāh is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give them [i.e., the disbelievers] what they have spent.1676 And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation [i.e., mahr]. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them [i.e., the disbelievers] ask for what they have spent.1677 That is the judgement of Allāh; He judges between you. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

- 1676 For marriage, i.e., compensate their loss.
- 1677 When a disbelieving wife chose to join the disbelievers, a Muslim husband could demand in return the equivalent of her mahr. Likewise, the disbelievers had a similar right when a believing woman joined the Muslims. This and the following verses were revealed subsequent to the Treaty of al-Ḥudaybiyyah.

Al-Mukhtasar
O you who believe in Allah and act by what He has legislated, if the believing women come to you emigrating from the land of disbelief to the land of Islam, then test them in the truthfulness of their faith. Allah is more knowledgeable of their faith; nothing is hidden from Him of what their hearts envelop. So if you know them to be believers, after the test, according to what is apparent to you of their truthfulness, then do not send them back to their disbelieving husbands. It is not permissible for the believing women to marry disbelievers or the disbelievers to marry the believing women. And give their husbands what they expended for their dowries. There is no sin upon you, O believers, to marry them after their 'iddah (waiting period before a woman becomes permissible for another man) concludes if you give them their dowries. And whoever has a wife who disbelieves or apostates from Islam should not hold on to her due to the severance of their marriage by her disbelief. Ask the disbelievers for what you expended as dowries for your apostating wives, and let them ask what they expended as dowries for their wives who entered Islam. That which is cited, of returning the dowries from your side and their side, is the ruling of Allah. He (may He be Exalted) rules between you with what He wishes. And Allah is Omniscient of the states of His slaves and their actions; nothing of them is hidden from Him, and He is wise in what He legislates for His slaves.
