Surah At-Tawbah 9:60 التوبة

When they criticized the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم for his distribution of charity, Allah vindicated him by explaining how it is disbursed and who its beneficiaries were, stating:

The Zakat (obligatory alms) must be spent on the poor, [which are the needy] who have money from a profession or a job. However, it is not enough for them, and their condition is not noticed. Also, it is for those in need who have almost nothing, and it is obvious to people because of their condition or what they tell people. Moreover, it is for the couriers [those employed] whom the imam sends to collect it. It is also for the disbelievers as a sign of friendship to bring them closer to Islam or for those of weak faith to strengthen their faith or prevent their evil. Likewise, it is to be disbursed to slaves to free them and debtors without extravagance or disobedience if they do not find fulfillment in their debt. Also, it is for equipment to be disposed of for the Mujahideen (fighters) for the sake of Allah and for the traveler whose expenses have been cut off. Restricting the disbursement of the obligatory charity to these people is an obligation from Allah, and Allah knows the interests of His slaves, Wise in His planning and His legislation.
